Chapter 1
“Why do they always have their dicks out?” Cassie mumbled, as she stared up at the full-figured marble statues lining the walkway.
“I beg your pardon, Miss?” one of the security guards asked her.
“Nothing,” she replied, pouting her full pink lips as her eyes were drawn back to the statues.
“This way, please, Miss. The Sheik is waiting.”
Nodding her head absently, Cassie climbed the stone steps slowly as she stared at the luxurious landscaping that served as a backdrop for the statues. Plants native to the region were alive with colour as butterflies moved from flower to flower. Reaching the top, she was expecting a lavish home, typical of country homes for European monarchy, but she was unprepared for this.
The boxy exterior of the home was dwarfed by the domed tower tiled in blue with gold overlay in a pattern typical of Middle Eastern countries. If the exterior was any example of what was too come, Cassie could not wait to see what it looked like on the inside.
She gasped as soon as she walked inside. The gold overlay pattern on the dome was repeated on the marble flooring. Her green eyes widened when she saw the over-sized crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling more than thirty feet off the ground.
“This is amazing,” Cassie whispered to herself. She barely noticed the various staff walking by on their business as she turned around in circles taking in the magnificence of the home. It was more beautiful than she had imagined.
“This way, Miss,” the security guard said to her.
Cassie snapped back to reality and looked at the guard who had been escorting her. She had been so caught up with the lavishness of the estate that she had forgotten why she was here. She smiled at him and nodded as he led her up the Imperial staircase framed in a golden banister. When they reached the landing, she took in the floor to ceiling gallery of paintings in elaborately carved frames. As she slowly walked down the corridor, she swore that many of these paintings were originally from museum collections as she silently tallied their value in her head.
“Excuse me, Miss, who are you here to see?” came a deep voice from behind her. She was too busy looking at the paintings that she did not even bother to turn.
“Sheik Hussain,” she mumbled and suppressed the urge to touch a painting of a mother and child. She wandered over to a display case of hand-painted antique plates many of which were floral prints while others were typical geometric designs common to the region. She could not believe that people once ate off them, well similar ones as these clearly were never used. She could not remember the last time she saw this many in one collection. The Moroccan museum in Marrakech only had five and two were damaged. These were perfect.
“Sorry, who?” the voice asked again. This time, Cassie turned around to see who it was. Standing in front of her was a tall, handsome man with dark hair. He looked to be some sort of bodyguard as his suit did nothing to hide the rippling muscles beneath.
“Sheik Hussain. You know... Really tall, strikingly handsome, exceptionally rich?” Cassie said jokingly but meant every word. Exceptionally rich, but not for much longer... She smiled as she waited for the other man's response. He raised his eyebrows and looked at her suspiciously.
“And who are you?” he asked robotically.
“Cassie,” she said. “And yourself?”
“Kalik, Sheik Hussain's right hand man.”
“So, you are his bodyguard?”
Kalik stared at her blankly and did not respond to her for a moment. “This way,” he said. She smiled and shoved him playfully.
“Why so serious?” she asked.
“What do you mean?”
“You are so stiff and robotic,” she replied and laughed alone. Looking her up and down, he turned and walked down the hall. “Tough crowd,” she whispered.
As they walked, she was once again swept up by the grand displays of antique pieces that easily rivalled any museum. Suddenly, she gasped as she stopped in front of a display of sapphires and rubies glittering in the morning light. Taking a quick glance at the case itself, she took note of the mini displacement sensors set to go off if anyone attempted to open the display case.
Cassie placed her hand on her stomach as she swallowed hard. Not even on her best day could she ever manage to acquire one of these beauties let alone amass a collection this size, which was clearly worth millions. She had to wonder what was hidden behind all the closed doors if a collection this valuable was sitting out in a hallway.
She tucked her brunette, silky-long hair behind her ears. She recognised one of the ruby rings from an article she had read in Smithsonian magazine. Thought to have been lost in one of the Crusades, it had shown up at a private auction a number of years ago and had sold for an
unprecedented price to an anonymous buyer. Smiling to herself, she speculated on what some of her competitors would pay just for that bit of knowledge as she wondered if she could manage to snap a picture of it without anyone seeing her.
“Are you coming?” Kalik demanded impatiently when he realised that she was not behind him.
“Here I come,” she replied and hurried towards him in her high heels. Just as she almost caught up to him, two men came out of a room on the right side of the hallway carrying a very large vase.
“Be care-” Kalik shouted to her but it was too late. Cassie’s shoes were slippery on the marble tile and she was unable to stop in time as she smacked her forehead against it and flew backwards, landing with a loud thud.
Chapter 2
Cassie slowly opened her eyes and blinked a few times as she waited for her vision to clear. Looking up, she was surprised to see a man with jet-black hair and piercing brown eyes staring down at her. Her gaze swept over him as she took in his straight nose, full lips and strong jaw.
Looking back at his lips, she wondered briefly, what they would feel like to kiss, before she took in his muscular physique. He was incredibly handsome. Her eyes drifted down to his crisp white shirt, which had the first few buttons undone showing off an equally impressive chest. She closed her eyes hoping that he was not a dream.
She opened them again in surprise when he reached down and wrapped his arm around her waist. They made eye contact, and neither one of them broke it as he helped her to her feet. As she stood, her head bumped against his chest and she noticed his woody musky scent.
She could not believe that he had picked her up as if she weighed nothing, surprising her with his strength. Her eyes remained glued to this gorgeous man as he stared back at her with an intense gaze. She could see that he was concerned about her.
“Are you alright?” he asked her his hands bracing both her shoulders as she stood unsteadily on her feet. His voice was enticingly deep and alluring. Cassie cleared her throat and finally broke eye contact frowning as she noticed her surroundings.
She looked at the high dome-shaped ceiling. They seemed to be in a wide hallway as several men stood around her looking at her with concern.
“Where am I?” she asked as she looked around at the unfamiliar room. Looking at the different faces and then back at the room, nothing seemed familiar as she bit back her panic. “Who…Who am I?” she asked the man who had helped her up. She stared at the men in hopes that one of them knew who she was.
“Are you my new assistant?” the man who helped her up asked her. His tone had turned cold and the glimpse of concern that she had seen in his eyes earlier was now gone. Growing impatient, “Why would the agency send me someone who does not seem to know what is going on? And why send you to my home? I do not have time for this.” He paused, scratching his stubble with his thumb, “It does not matter. Just make sure to learn fast, I will not tolerate any incompetence,” he added.
She stared at him wide-eyed with her lips slightly parted. She was confused. She had no idea what this man was speaking to her about.
“Agency?” she mumbled.
“What is your name?” he demanded.
Opening her bag, she searched for any clues to her identity. Finding a wallet, she opened it to find credit cards and a passport.
Cassie Milton- was stamped on them. That must be who I am- she thought to herself.
“Cassie,” she said quietly, still confused. She cleared her throat. “Cassie Milton,” she said a bit louder attempting to sound more confident. She looked at the other man who stood there like a robot with no emotion on his face. Up until now, he had said nothing allowing the other man to speak. “You are..?” she asked him.
“Kalik, we met minutes ago,” he said and looked at the other man curiously.
“Come with me,” the man who had helped her to her feet said to her.
“Erm... excuse me?” Cassie tried to speak but he was already walking off. She trailed after him looking around as they walked. It would seem as though they were in some sort of museum or possibly a large home, but why would she be here? None of this was making sense to her. She did not even know how she ended up on the floor in the first place.
“All the training they give you at the agency is useless. I will tell you everything I need you to do,” he said to her as he walked.
What agency and what training? Cassie wondered. Was she there for some kind of job or something? But who was he? As she walked next to him, she looked at him. He was very tall and muscular, he took long strides that were difficult for her to match in her bodycon dress and high heels, they were meant more for looks than movement. As they walked down the hall, people stopped and bowed their heads to him. They respected him. Some of the women stared with such obvious lust in their eyes. Clearly, he was someone very important. And attractive. Oh so very attractive, she thought.
Cassie gave up on telling him that she did not know who she was or why she was there. He was not even listening to her as he persisted in speaking over her as he described how he wanted things done. He sounded meticulous. Part of her wanted to grab him and shout that she did not know why she was there or who she was. However, the other part of her was intrigued by this man and she was curious enough to play it out to see what happens.
“Excuse me...” Cassie trailed off. The man stopped and looked at her as he waited for her to speak. “What do I call you?” she asked. She did not know the best way to ask him who he was without sounding rude and given how people were bowing to him, she thought this might be the easiest way. She also hoped that if she heard his name, it would jog her memory.
“Sheik Hussain,” he said with a blank stare and a cold tone. She felt awkward but it had to be done. Unfortunately, his name did not ring a bell as he turned on his heel and walked off. She stood there for a couple of seconds, still confused.
“Keep up,” he shouted over his shoulder.
“Yes, sir,” she said and hurried down the hall to catch up to him. She caught a whiff of his musky scent once again. He smelled so good and that made her feel strange. He opened the door and they walked into a large office that was completely white from the marble floors to the white leather sofa and chairs to the thick glass table and white desktop computer. The room was beautiful and clinically clean. Cassie was impressed.
“This is my home office,” Hussain said.
“Oh, so this is your house?” she asked. Hussain turned and gave her an odd look.
“Yes,” he answered as if she had asked something obvious. Cassie scratched the back of her head and winced at the tenderness. When did she hit her head? Rubbing at it, she looked around the room, her eyes settling on the only splash of colour, a painting on the wall. Suddenly his phone rang.
“Speak,” he said into the microphone. Cassie raised her eyebrows. What a rude way to answer- she thought. “Okay,” he said and hung up the phone. He returned his attention to her. “Your bags will remain here until we return. Let's go,” he said to her.
Cassie raised her eyebrows and widened her green eyes. “Go?” she asked.
“The car is waiting and I have an important meeting,” he said and walked towards the exit.
“Bags,” she repeated softly. She had brought her luggage? Her curiosity grew even more. She needed to find out why she was here, and Sheik Hussain was the key to that mystery.
Chapter 3
Hussain stepped out into the bright sun to see that his chauffeur was already standing by the back door to his Rolls Royce. He scowled in annoyance at the agency’s choice of a suitable assistant as Cassie came to stand next to him.
He could see why other men would be happy to have her as their assistant – her gorgeous green eyes and curvy body would definitely turn heads. But he wasn’t interested; there was too much at stake with the upcoming takeover. Now was not the time for a relationship. Looking at her again, he noted that she was dressed inappropriately to work with him and he wondered again whether the agency f
ully screened every candidate. And what was worse was that she was constantly repeating everything he said as if she were a parrot.
He needed an assistant who could keep up with his hectic schedule and he had no time to waste. He made a mental note to contact them to discuss their criteria for personal assistant.
The chauffeur opened the door for them and Cassie climbed into the car first. Hussain frowned. He was a Sheik and cousin to the royal Tazeem family. No one dared to enter the room before him. Now here was this bold new assistant getting into his car before him. Hussain was shocked as he watched her slide over to the left side of the backseat. His seat. He always sat in the left seat. His cousin, James, often teased him that he was too OCD about it but he did not care.
“Would you mind sitting in this seat,” Hussain said to Cassie indicating the right side. He phrased it as politely as he could, but he really wanted to say, “Remove yourself from my seat this instant!”
“I am fine right here, thanks,” she replied with a small smile. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Evidently, she thought that it was a request.
“I sit on the left side.”
